About Kia Kali

What if the boundaries between the physical and spiritual worlds were more porous than we think? Can art act as a portal into the liminal spaces between these realms? My work is an invitation into the inner dimensions of our bodies and our psyches where reality and imagination blend.

My Work

I combine different media, the sensed body and ceremonial elements to design experiences. My multidisciplinary practice encompasses video, performance, sound, text, immersive installations and AR/VR technologies. My body of work ranges from single video-performance pieces to installations where I perform and interact with visitors.

In my ongoing work Chest of Mirrors, I invite people to draw a card from a deck I created and then show them a video connected to the card they selected, evoking associations and encouraging personal interpretation. In Limbo (2022), visitors journeyed through multiple room installations into a dimension between life and death, where I guided them into ceremonies honoring death. My exhibit Silencio (2022) presented two series of short video works accessed via AR and a series of solo and duo performances I created on the concept of silence.

In each work, I create dreamlike environments to explore our perceptions of reality and our connection with our bodies. What permeates my practice is a search for the intimate and imaginative states that can emerge when we blur out distractions, sharpen our senses and let ourselves be taken on a journey.

I am particularly fascinated by the liminal spaces between the real and the imaginary, the seen and the unseen, the visible and the hidden. By tapping into my sensory awareness and dreamlike psyche, I investigate how we can connect with our inner selves, our imagination and our environment to create new
realities and feel more alive. My artistic practice revolves around creating immersive experiences of self-exploration, inviting introspection and shifting conscious perceptions.

My Process

My process is rooted in intuition, existential inquiries and experimentation, in
fluenced by philosophical questions and diverse body-mind practices. My works usually originate from diving into a psycho-physical state of not-knowing or open attention. I observe and trace the impulses that emerge in my body-mind, resulting in visions and journeys that later take form through further research, world creation, and thorough refinement.

Drawing inspiration from the power of natural environments, dreams, and feminine qualities, I weave soft, hypnotic and sensual aesthetics. I sculpt in time and space to transform real-world landscapes into surreal, magical realms. I often introduce interactive elements to invite viewers to participate directly in my work, encouraging personal introspection.

My Vision

Through my work, I seek to challenge traditional hierarchies of perception and explore states of consciousness that shed light on our sensorial and psychological landscapes, reflections, dreams and desires. I see art as a multimedia laboratory for experimenting with new ways of experiencing the fields we inhabit. I envision my installed works as invitations to slow down and more consciously experience ourselves, while immersing in worlds that are surreal, mystical and perhaps magical.

My Background

I was born in Buenos Aires, Argentina, and studied internationally, receiving my BA in the United States (Dickinson College) and my MFA from the University of Fine Arts of Hamburg. I participated in study programs in performance arts at the University of Hyderabad in India and media arts at University Bremen in Germany. I have also trained and been certified in diverse somatic, body-oriented and meditative practices, which I incorporate into my art and
facilitate via workshops and sessions.

I live and work in Berlin, Germany - a city I've called home since 2015. Since 2019, I have collaborated with my artistic partner Alex Kaos and the art collective Dream World, leading projects and presenting them to several thousands of visitors. My works have been kindly supported by public funding programs such as Neustart Kultur, Stiftung Kunstfonds and Dezentrale Kulturarbeit and shown in galleries and project spaces in Berlin and abroad.
