What does it mean to be alone? How is it different from being lonely? How have we connected with this topic in the last 18 months of pandemic outbreaks and lockdowns?
"Aloneness" explores the relationship we cultivate with ourselves in solitude. Six immersive installations invite visitors to experience a different aspect of this topic, offering contained spaces to breathe, think and feel while blurring the view of others and sharpening the inner connection. Visitors are guided through the experience with written prompts and a sound piece played via headphones. With verbal language, sound light, touch and smell, this exhibition offers a multi-sensory journey to explore the light and shadows of the most intimate relationship and the one that matters most: the one with oneself. |
THE LANDING
3x3m, hanging old envelops, quotes on paper After listening to an inductive sound piece, visitors arrive at The Landing, where fifteen old envelops that were once used to communicate across distances now reveal selected quotes on Aloneness. Throughout the whole experience, a sound piece accompanies visitors from space to space via headphones. |
SINCE THE WOMB
6x2 / 6x1 m, red carpet, objects on velvet pedestals Participants are asked to recreate their time inside the womb. Afterwards, they are prompted to choose an object that they connect the most with Aloneness and bathe themselves in an associated memory. |
INSIDE MY PSYCHE
4x2,5m, bean bags, pillows, bench, projection on wall Video: Color, Stereo, Full HD, 9:16, 8 min 10 sec Participants can sit or lay on bean bags, breathe and watch a video piece that fills a wall vertically with surreal compositions inside the psyche of a woman. |
THE LABYRINTH OF SOLITUDE
6x6x3,5m, wooden dome, blackout cloth, mirror, tea candle, lotus candle holder Visitors enter a completely dark dome with warm, soft cloth on the ground. Inside the blackout space, the prompt is to sense the soles of the feet and follow the path that lies beneath, while thinking of three words for feelings that one would like to evoke upon one's death. The cloth lies in a sinuous path guiding the way of a labyrinth and spiraling around the center piece: a lotus flower with a candle reflected on a mirror. The cloth then guides participants' feet out of the dark dome. |
THE LIGHT YOU BRING
6x1,5m, wooden portals, LEDs, white cloth, cotton filaments, curtains After the dark dome, participants transition into a bright tunnel and walk through sets of curtains, hanging cotton and portals of light, while asked to reflect upon how we talk to ourselves in our heads and remember a positive phrase while crossing each portal. |
THE GARDEN
3x3x3m, wood, plants, lights, pillows, writing supplies At the end, participants come to an aromatic site with a wooden structure, warm light and plants. After an instance to remember a moment alone in nature, visitors are invited to sit and intuitively write down reflections on Aloneness for a predetermined amount of time. Afterwards, they can hang their reflections on the installation. |
